Nepal-Japan ties: Symposium on Transport connectivity; Challenges and opportunities held

Biratnagar/Kathmandu: The Nepal JSPS Alumni Association (NJAA), hosted its 8th Symposium. November 1, 2023.

The NJAA was established by those Nepalese who had done postdoctoral researches in Japan through JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) program.

Japan’s Ambassador Mr. KIKUTA Yutaka gave remarks at the inaugural session, appreciating the role that the NJAA was playing for the promotion of scientific exchange between Nepal and Japan.

In his Ambassadorial remarks, under the theme of “Transport Connectivity in Nepal: Challenges and Opportunities,” he pointed out the importance of transport connectivity for development, taking the case of, as an example, Japan’s major projects after the devastation by the World War II, including the Tokaido Shinkansen (Bullet Train) and Tomei Kosoku (Tokyo-Nagoya Highway).

On the occasion, the Japanese envoy mentioned his country Japan’s support to Nepal’s transport connectivity projects, including the B.

P Highway, that connects Kathmandu to the Terai plains, and the ongoing Nagdhunga tunnel construction.

The BP highway connects Kathmandu with Bardibas via Sindhuli.

He introduced his experience of attending the breakthrough ceremony of Nagdhunga evacuation tunnel last August with Honourable Mr. Prakash Jwala, Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, who was the Chief Guest of this Symposium.

He stated that cooperation of both Nepalese and Japanese people at the Nagdhunga tunnel construction project made a heartfelt impression on him and hoped the transfer of the technology from Japan and experiences gained through this difficult work would certainly improve the skills of the Nepalese officials and workers to achieve the transport connectivity all over Nepal in future.

Lastly, Ambassador Mr. KIKUTA Yutaka said that Japan had extended its technical cooperation and assistance to Nepal for its development as the human resource development would be a foundation of nation building, and the JSPS Fellowship Program was one exemplary proof of them.

During the long friendly decades, Japan has extended its assistance to Nepal for its development including technical cooperation on education.
