Nepal: Finland supports School Sector Development Plan (SSDP)

Kathmandu: Last year on December 23, 2020, Finland disbursed EUR 1 415 000 (200 704 000 NPR) to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), Government of Nepal to support the COVID-19 response activities in school education under the School Sector Development Plan (SSDP).
This is the first installment out of the total committed amount of EUR 2 514 000 (357 651 000 NPR).

This is an additional support to the on-going School Sector Development Plan (SSDP) program, which Finland is supporting with a total of 20 million euros (2,320 million NPR) in the years 2016–2020.

The SSDP covers the entire basic education system in Nepal and is funded jointly by the Government of Nepal and its Development Partners. The program runs through the years 2016–2021.

The education sector of Nepal has greatly suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finland’s additional support to COVID-19 response plan will support the MoEST/GoN to ensure the continuity of learning of all children including children with disabilities and from marginalized backgrounds across the country during school closures due to the global pandemic situation.

It will also support to ensure the safe return of children to schools and continue safe learning in post-pandemic situation.

The activities and supports are aligned to the Nepal Education Sector Cluster Contingency Plan 2020, which was jointly developed by the MoEST and Nepal Education Cluster Group in spring 2020 with the aim to prevent the spread of the virus from education institutions into local communities and to continue children’s learning by providing safe and alternative learning measures.

The support will be channeled and monitored as part of Nepal School Sector Development Plan (SSDP) program.
