The oldest party of Nepal, the Nepali Congress, has landed in non-ending trouble.
The party is experiencing even a likely threat to its very existence should the responsible leaders become irresponsible.
The debate inside the party is increasing in ascertaining or say recognizing the person(s) whose acts at time of the last national election caused irreparable damage to the popularity and the political strength of the party, the NC, to the extent that the party now is on the verge of extinction.
The fact is that the common people now have begun talking less of this party.
The vibrant party of the bygone era now faces humiliation in the comity of other similar parties that operate in Nepal.
The political conglomerate though claims itself as a party synonymous to democracy, but the fact is that neither the party neither pursues a democratic character internally nor intends to retain its democratic identity, if any, that has been experienced over the decades.
The decay thus continues.
The fresh election reversals has alarmed the party stalwarts but yet the party paraphernalia instead of correcting the faults that caused the debacle in the national elections has been engaged in a blame game between the countless factions that is further weakening the NC party.
Bluntly speaking, each and every NC man, even the new entrant, claims that he is the leader of the party.
The outside observers who possess sympathy for the oldest party claim that the NC’s current endless unhealthy debate is inviting more troubles for the party in the near future which may have been in the store.
The faction or say the panel led by Dr. Shekhar Koirala, Ram Chandra Poudel, KP Sitaula and PM Singh summarily blame the party President Sher Bahadur Deuba for the shameful results in the election.
These leaders are unanimous in sounding President Deuba that he would do well if he resigns from the party post that he has been occupying.
Vocal of them all against Deuba are Dr.
Koirala and PM Singh who perhaps have made it a point not to let Deuba remain in peace until he resigned from the President post.
However, Deuba remains undeterred. Deuba perhaps enjoys the backing of Party General Secretary Dr. Shashank Koirala who says that each and every party leader should share the blame for the election reversal in an equal manner.
Dr. Shekhar Koirala, who lost the election this time, has made volley of accusations against his own Party President, which among others include, assisting Maoists leader Prachanda’s daughter winning the Bharatpur Municipal elections without having proper consultations in the party, awarding the election tickets to his near and dear ones and the daddy of them all blame include the India imposed economic blockade on Nepal.
Dr. Koirala claims that NC’s biggest blunder was that the party did not took the blockade as an economic blockade imposed by India on Nepal that it was in effect.
This means that a section inside the Congress too had felt the brunt of the India imposed blockade, such as Dr. Koirala, but yet had to gulp the bitter pill for fear of being penalized by the Indian regime.
All in all, the debate is on. President Deuba is having bad times in the party. Deuba’s enemies inside the party are increasing.
While the NC is weeping as of now, the UML under PM KPS Oli has reasons to smile for a while.
Oli’s smile depends much upon the sagacity of Prachanda for understandable reasons.
PM Oli though has already embarked on an end of it all game paths willingly and thus his smiling days too may have shortened.
Now it is time for PM Modi to smile. The reasons are simple that could well be guessed in advance.
Now it remains yet to be seen as to how Dr.
Shekhar Koirala takes up his issue in the days ahead.
Needless to say, Dr. Koirala should now concentrate his efforts in democratizing the party first and then, if possible and if he so desires, he must initiate actions in forging intimate ties with the democratic forces scattered in the country in order to match the terrifying strength of the Left Alliance. This is urgent in that such an action now very much is associated with the very existential question of the party itself.
The message is clear.
