Nepal: Minister Mahara's China trip significant, analysts
TGW
Nepal’s Minister for Information and Communication, Mr. Krishna Bahadur Mahara is not in Kathmandu these days. Reports say that the Maoists high ranking leader secretly flew to Beijing on May 31, 2008.
Reports add, Mr. Mahara’s China Yatra is sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. However, what is intriguing is that why the Government of Nepal more so the Maoists’ party here chose not to publicize the visit?
Mr. Mahara is returning home today.
For the Maoists in Nepal, say analysts, China could be an ideological partner, but politically, culturally and traditionally speaking, the Maoists find themselves very close to India- China’s declared arch rival.
Comrade Prachanda only recently talking to Karan Thapar for CNN-IBN had made it clear that Maoist want special relations with India though the theory of “equidistance” for the sake of public consumption will be in place.
In all, Mahara’s China visit this time should be taken seriously in Nepal’s political circuit.
Analysts say that China is slowly penetrating into Nepali politics much to the chagrin of the Indian establishment.
