Nepal Govt partners corner Maoists for Charter Draft Committee

TGW

The 22-Party Coalition partners have made decision against the Maoists’ leadership in the Constitution Drafting Committee.

The Maoists’ Party has been forwarding Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai, the party vice chairman as the head of the committee after Madhav Kumar Nepal resigned from the Committee head upon his appointment as the Prime Minister of the country.

The coalition partners took the decision to vote in favor of a common candidate for the post. However, the coalition partners have not been able to formally declare their common candidate.

Making his views public at the meeting, the NCP-ML General Secretary Mr. C. P. Mainali urged the coalition partners to support his candidacy.

Report also reveals that the Nepali Congress party is greatly divided over their much talked candidate Mr. Nilambar Acharya.

The election is scheduled for Monday August 17, 2009.

On the other hand, the Maoists’ party immediately protested the 22-Party Decision and called it a move to ignore the politics of consensus.

The Maoists’ Party spokesperson Mr. Dina Nath Sharma revealed that the major parties had already committed themselves to support the Maoists’ candidate for the post.
