Khanal-Oli feud at its peak, Nepal UML close to split!

TGW

The war of words between the UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal and senior leader K. P. Sharma Oli has already threatened a vertical split in the moderate communist party of Nepal if the continuing verbal war continue for long.

When Khanal was elected as the Chairman of the UML in the last Butwal, Rupendehi District General Assembly, the Maoists were blamed for spending huge sum of money in favor of Khanal, whereas Oli’s defeat was taken as the defeat of Nepali Congress President Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala. By extension, analysts further claim, that the current war in the UML camp is also being projected as the fight between the China tilted faction led by Khanal with the India friendly group ’Oli faction’ in the UML camp.

Is this then China versus India war?

Khanal while addressing a gathering on Friday, August 28, 2009, vowed to take strong action against the other faction if it continued to disregard party’s discipline.

Is there any discipline left in the UML now?

On Saturday, August 29, 2009, it was the turn of Mr. Oli to come down heavily against Chairman Khanal-Oli’s number one arch rival at the moment.

Oli claimed that winning election in the Butwal General Assembly should not be taken as a win in the gambling.

“One cannot capture everything even if you win an election...there are certain norms and disciplines to abide by”, claimed Oli adding, “If the party is run as per the whims of certain people, the cadres will forget that they had elected a Chairman in Butwal.”

Oli was addressing a meeting organized by the freshly dissolved members of the Kathmandu District Committee.

The Kathmandu District Committee was dissolved by the Steering Committee which has the majority of Khanal faction. And this is the very reason that has encouraged Oli to pounce upon Khanal.

“I was the one who brought Khanal into the UML leadership”, said Oli adding, “It was around 2027 B.S I had sent people towards Sakhejung of Ilam to look for a cadre called just as Mr. Khanal.”

“Later Comrade Mohan Chandra Adhikari brought him in the party leadership, now the same person is trying to chase me away from the party ranks”, Oli revealed the old past.

How Khanal reacts to these Oli comments will provide yet another entertaining dimension to the current Oli-Khanal feud?

UML has no future. It has to split on way or the other. It only has a future of few more years. Ultimately maoist and congress will prevail.
