Nepal Maoists believe in politics of consensus: Prachanda

TGW

The Unified Maoists Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda has said that his party has no intention to remove the incumbent President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav.

Talking to journalists at the Tea Party Organized by his party, October 20, 2009 in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu, the Maoists’ party Chief also urged other political parties to abide by the norms of the Interim Constitution.

“We want all the parties to abide by the Interim Constitution…our demand is not to remove the President nor we want to unnecessarily make him the party’s target”, Prachanda said.

“We need to forge consensus and concentrate on drafting the constitution”.

While Dahal was talking to journalists, he was also accompanied by the United Marxist Leninists Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal, Nepali Congress acting president Mr. Sushil Koirala and Nepali Congress leader of the Constituent Assembly Delegation Mr. Ram Chandra Poudel.

“All we need is equal commitment from all the stakeholders to forge unity and consensus” said the former prime minister adding that “I am certain that the top leadership of all three parties would find an amicable exit from the current deadlock.”

“I have the feeling that we all are equally worried about the situation currently the country is in.”

“In one or two days, we will find solution to the current dispute.”

“We need to focus ourselves towards peace and prosperity of the country”, he continued.

“As we all know that only through the politics of consensus we have been able to promulgate Interim Constitution and declare the country a Republic…it is imperative now that we continue with the same spirit as we exhibited in the past”.

However, when asked by journalists if formation of the government on its own leadership or the Politics of Consensus, what was the Maoists’ Priority, the former rebel leader opined that it was obviously Consensus which was the first priority but he said “It was not unusual for Maoists to forward claim over the command of the government”.

Political polarization is not there as yet. To remind you, the Maoists have come only after a people’s war but not the rest of the political parties. It could be this factor which may have brought or to come to surface certain differences with the Maoists over some political issues. More..
