Indian Interest in Nepal is Logical: S.B.Thapa

TGW

Mr. Surya Bahadur Thapa, the chairman of the Rastriya Jan Shakti Party has said that the Nepali Congress and the United Marxist Leninists’ Party are primarily responsible for the current political imbalance observed in the national politics.

Thapa also believes that the current political imbalance is due to the misadventure of the NC and the UML who have, in effect,  brought the Maoists’ Party to this political level and stature.

Thapa made these remarks while talking to the Rajdhani Daily dated November 4, 2009.

“The Nepali Congress had excessive lust for the post of the President, the UML was certain that it will gain majority in the Constituent Assembly elections…the self-centered policies adopted by the two major parties gave the Maoists’ the leverage to do whatever they wished”, says Thapa.

“In the initial days of the peace process, they (NC-UML) failed to tame the Maoists…but, they did not want to irritate the Maoists”, said Mr. Thapa who leads a fringe political force in Nepal yet holds immense significance in New Delhi power corridors.

“The end result was there for all to see…neither could the Nepali Congress elevate its desired person as the country’s president…let alone garnering majority, the UML too could not even save its past political stature and say in Nepali politics”, Thapa opines.

“The Maoist’s joining the mainstream politics was always a welcome move, but the speculation that an armed outfit would turn into a saintly entity immediately after signing the peace agreement was completely a false conclusion”, he said.

Thapa favoring direct intervention of India in Nepal also says that “…as and when Nepal’s political situation deteriorates, as a friendly neighbor, it is not unusual for India to take some responsibilities.”

“However, to avoid such a situation, we need to solve our problems on our own”, he also says adding, “Else we may also lose our right to blame others”.

Thapa has freshly returned from New Delhi and thus his some what ad nauseating comments should not be taken as an unusual one.

Five questions

alt No design to corner Maoists
Pashupati Shumser Rana , Chairman, Rastriya Prajatantra Party
Political polarization is not there as yet. To remind you, the Maoists have come only after a people’s war but not the rest of the political parties. It could be this factor which may have brought or to come to surface certain differences with the Maoists over some political issues. More..
