Nepal Leader spits venom against UN Mission in Nepal

TGW

The UN under Secretary-General for Political Affairs, B. Lynn Pascoe whose fervent speech made at the Nepal Policy Research Institute March 12, 2010 has not been taken well by the political parties here in Nepal.

Pascoe had pointed out directly that the political partitas of Nepal were trying to blame the UN political mission in Nepal- UNMIN to hide their own failures in handling the peace process of Nepal.

Pascoe is on the way to New York to brief the Security Council on Nepal situation.

He already left Kathmandu March 12, 2010.

“In the face of this situation, we are dismayed that some commentators try to hold the mission responsible for situations and shortcomings that by the very insistence of the parties themselves, the mission (UNMIN) has little or no capacity to control. This is absurd and should come to an end”, Pascoe told an academic gathering.

Pascoe almost took the Nepali leaders as rotten eggs.

A day after Pascoe’s speech, some leaders of the parties having representation in the government, Nepali Congress and United Marxist Leaders, heavily criticized the UNMIN for its biased behavior which went in favor of the United Marxist Leninists’ Party in an amazing manner.

Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat and Mr. Bhim Prasad Neupane of the NC and UML told a gathering in Kathmandu that UNMIN has played insignificant role in Nepal’s peace process and suggested that the process of monitoring of Maoists’ Combatants should also be freed from the UNMIN mandate.

“Was the UNMIN brought to just guard the Maoists’ weapons”, Dr. Mahat questioned.

“While Prachanda was provoking his combatants to prepare themselves for urban revolt the UNMIN preferred not to utter a single word”, said Mahat adding, “What is the need for the longer stay of a bias UNMIN that it is?”

“The monitoring of Maoists’ Combatants should be done by the parties themselves”, suggested Mr. Bhim Neupane.

The frail Nepali Congress President, Girija Prasad Koirala recently instructed Nepal PM to get rid of the UNMIN at the earliest possible period.

Speaking in Dhangadi Nepal’s Minister for Information and Communication Mr. Shankar Pokharel also alleged that UNMIN was primarily to be held responsible for the sorry state of Nepal’s peace process.

“The government has taken seriously UNMIN’s refusal to provide details of the Maoists’ combatants”, he told a press meeting organized by Press-Chautari.

“This is highly objectionable”, said the Minister.

Interestingly, the Unified Maoists’ Party mouth piece Jana Disha Daily dated March 13, 2010 writes that the UNMIN being snubbed by the Nepali leaders of late has been executed as per the diktats of the Indian masters.
